Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Balcı
Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon
Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Balcı was born in New York in 1978. He graduated from Galatasaray High School in 1997 and from Marmara University School of Medicine in 2004, and began his residency in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine the same year. Today he is a faculty member in the same department, working clinically and academically in limb lengthening, deformity surgery, the Ilizarov method and paediatric orthopaedics.
Education and specialisation
He completed his residency in 2010 with a cadaver thesis on the relationship between hindfoot arthroscopy portals and anatomical structures. After compulsory service at Siirt State Hospital between 2010 and 2012, he returned to Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2012. He passed the Turkish Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (TOTEK) examination in 2011 and the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT) examination in 2013. He became associate professor in 2017 and full professor in September 2022.
International experience
He worked at the Paley Institute (West Palm Beach, USA) as a research fellow in 2014 and as an observer in 2019, gaining experience in deformity surgery, Ilizarov techniques, congenital bone anomalies and paediatric orthopaedics.
Academic work
He has more than 50 international publications on deformity, limb lengthening and paediatric orthopaedics. He is one of the editors of Basic Techniques for Extremity Reconstruction: External Fixator Applications According to Ilizarov Principles (Springer, 2018) and has written chapters in national textbooks.
Administrative roles
Between 2017 and 2019 he served as deputy chief physician of Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine.
